Oberlander Honored as Rural Health Legislator of Year
10/23/2018
HARRISBURG – Citing her legislative efforts to help promote diabetes education and to help regulate milk banks in Pennsylvania, Rep. Donna Oberlander (R-Clarion/Armstrong/Forest) was named as this year’s recipient of the Rural Health Legislator of the Year Award from the Pennsylvania Office of Rural Health.

“I am honored and humbled to receive this important award,” said Oberlander, who serves as co-chairman of the House Diabetes Caucus. “Our work in Harrisburg not only involves developing good public policy on a number of rural health issues, but also working to ensure that the voices of our rural area are heard and understood.”

The Rural Health Legislator of the Year Award recognizes a Pennsylvania legislator for outstanding work and support of rural health initiatives that address an identified need in their district or across the state.

During the recent 2017-18 session, Oberlander has secured committee or chamber approval of two important health-related measures: House Bill 2516 would ensure the supply of human milk gathered and stored at milk banks is healthy and safe for those infants with serious health challenges; and House Bill 899, which would allow anti-obesity drugs already approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be considered for payment by Medicaid.

To help enhance her legislative work, Oberlander also participated and completed Clarion University’s program to become a certified recovery specialist for drug and alcohol addiction.

The Pennsylvania Office of Rural Health (PORH) is one of the 50 state offices of rural health, and is a partnership between the United States federal government, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania State University. PORH is charged with being a source of coordination, technical assistance and networking; partnership development; and assisting in the recruitment and retention of health care providers.
